Week One Update

September 24th, 2010

Just finished up the first week of production and we’ve definitely found our rhythm.  We’ve met incredible people and are continuously surprised by their generosity and enthusiasm for the project.  This morning we shot a group of farmers as they rode out for a full day of herding.  Their horses had been grazing in the high country for eight months, and need to be brought home for the winter.  Later in the afternoon we hiked up a mountain and saw the herd crossing a stream in the valley.  By the time the video camera and 4×5 were on their tripods, hundreds of horses were running at us.  After three hours of hiking, we only captured a few minutes of footage and several sheets of film, but it was worth the effort.  We still have over a week in Iceland, with three more roundups and several scheduled interviews.

Don’t Try This at Home: Horses Heading Home

September 24th, 2010

While driving back to Thingeyrar farm this afternoon we came across two horses on the side of the road walking home by themselves after a hard day herding the horses from the highlands.  We decided to shoot a bit of video out the driver’s side window… not the wisest decision but here’s a fun clip.

Skrapatungurétt: Video Takes From Day Two

September 20th, 2010

Just a few video takes from the second day of filming here in Iceland… we put in a full day of shooting and it was great.  No major equipment debacles and the light and weather were cooperative.  The day was spent documenting the horses as they were being sorted by the owners and then driven back to their home farms.  We were invited to a festive dinner at Sandra and Ragnar’s farm for meat soup, sherry meringue, and good conversation.

A Peek at Some First Day of Video

September 19th, 2010

We were able to make it out to the first roundup… the light was great, we were a bit rushed and there were some equipment fatalities but we managed to get some video shot.  We didn’t have time to sync the audio last night so this is just MOS except for the farmers singing at the end which is just the on board mic but was too cool to silence. All in all a good first day.

Arrival in Reykjavik

September 16th, 2010

Arrived in the wee hours of the morning into Reykjavik… excited to start shooting this weekend.  Lindsay arrives on Saturday morning and we have a roundup to shoot the same day.  A bit disorienting waking up in Pennsylvania, taking a train to NYC, having lunch in mid-town, packing in Brooklyn, and going to bed in Iceland.  Busy 24 hours but nice to finally be starting the project. -Paul

Field Trip: City Island

September 10th, 2010

Today we took the new camera gear out to the Bronx Equestrian Center for an initial field test.  All went well, still figuring out some of the audio syncing issues but the first pictures coming out of the canon are looking great.  After an afternoon of filming we dined at Tony’s Pier Restaurant on City Island.  It wasn’t that great.
